“Not my will but yours be done” Luke 22:42
When it comes to your fulfillment and your joy, God is more passionate than you will ever be.
A friend of mine tells me that he comes to church early every morning before he goes into the city because it is in the church that he finds his bearing for the proceedings of the day. Equally, it is God who has given us the gift of this new year and it fits that it must be in God that we find our bearing for the year.
As we figure our bearing, general wisdom will tell you to make goals that are measurable and reasonable, which is very good and true. Godly wisdom will go a step further and tell you that to your list of hopes, add the phrase “may your will God be done.” Therefore, as we consider our aspirations, we must hoist our desires beyond the Mezzanine by adding this all important clause – “may your will Lord be done.”
Often times “Your will be done” comes with mixed feelings:
To some it is a feeling of passivity…passivity because they opt to do nothing and wait for God’s will to be done.
To others it comes with a feeling of cancellation…like there is no relevance in articulating our desires because God will shuffle them and have His way anyway.
To others “Your will be done” deposits a taste of distrust…we question God’s commitment to our dreams. “Can I really trust God with what I want?” “Does He understand it exactly?” We trust our will more than the will of God – we think our minds articulate us better; we fear God may be a little indifferent, even uninformed and so He may dilute the shades of our intensity. “Your will be done?” No! - We feel our dreams are safer with us.
To others “Your will be done” comes with fear…fear that praying “God’s will to be done” will send you a misfortune – a heaven-crafted set back; Like God will take up your surrender and use it to resign you from the city and post you to hardship zones; to a wilderness without food in the name of instilling in you the virtue of endurance and perseverance.
You fear that God may ask you to quit your tantalizing man - your mesmerizing girl and arrange for you to link up with a stranger who is an 18-wheel truck of trouble in the name of prophecy, mission and loving your neighbor.
Worse still, He may send you to the cross!
But as we begin this new season, be encouraged to know that there’s nothing but good possibilities when we pray over our ambitions with the invitation “let your will be done.”
His will engineered this space called earth – and called it “very good”
His will declares that - “He makes all things beautiful in His time”
His will says “Come to me, you who is weak and heavy laden and I will give you rest”
His will states “I came that you may have life, and have it more abundantly”
His will tips us that “He is able to do exceedingly above what you ask or think”
Praying “may your will be done” deposits what your mind has dreamt to the possibilities present in the bigger mind of God;
It delivers the delicate desires you care for onto the hands of Love…Love with a capital “L”;
It tunes your hopes to the rhythm of Life – life with a capital L;
It places your existence as an instrument in the orchestra of the unstoppable mission of God.
I have experienced and I keep learning over and over time that we do not need to convince God about how badly we need to succeed; how much we need a good year – for when it comes to your fulfillment and your joy, God is more passionate about it than you will ever be.
