Church School Background
- Initially there was only a crèche in the Mcleven Chapel.
- · In the 1970s and early 1980s Mrs. Phoebe Kigira was the Sunday School’s Superintendent (today Chairperson) and offered very able leadership. She arranged for teacher’ courses which were well attended by teachers from all the St Andrew’s Congregations including Lang’ata, Silanga, Emmanuel, Kangemi & Loresho. The courses revitalized the teaching and the get-to-gether generated real spiritual revival among teachers. Those who worked with her initially included Ev. John A.Miriti who had worked with Scripture Union before joining St Andrew’s , Elder Peterson M.Mathenge, Ev. Harun Wamwangi, Edward Kamau, Isaac Irungu, Dr Naftali Muriithi and Rev Wanjau. Among the earliest teachers was Eunice Waithera Keriri.
- · Way back then the Sunday School Curriculum was in the form of a book published by the Jitegemea Publishers in Kikuyu language. As the language used in the Parish was English, this was not useful. The books then used were from Scripture Union or Child Evangelism Fellowship. Later on the Parish switched to CLMC (Christian Learning Material Centre) Curriculum which is in use to-date. Lately there have been identified gaps in the curriculum and a review was recommended. The process was started internally within the Parish but has not been concluded. The Uzima Press organized a workshop about two years ago which brought together children workers from different churches to review the existing curriculums- particularly Scripture Union, CEF, and CLMC. This culminated in the publishing of new curriculum. This is yet to gain wide acceptance especially by our Parish as it still did not satisfy the needs of the children beside the price being prohibitive.
- · With the growth of the Parish in terms of numbers the one service grew into the 1st and “Main Service” then into the 1st, 2nd and 3rd services. Each of those services has a Sunday School running alongside them.
- · The Parish participated in Sunday School Rallies with the following aims:
- o Learning together and from each group.
- o Singing
- o Teachers learn different methods of teaching and organizing.
- o Discussing syllabus by teachers
